What’s the first and the last thing you see when you visit someone?
Right! Front door!
I painted our front door as soon as we moved into our house. I chose scarlet red by Behr and I still love how it looks from the outside.
Front Door Makeover
While red gives a warm and welcoming vibe from the outside, I want something different inside the house.
This is the 3rd week of the One Room Challenge and I’m ready to give our front door a quick makeover.
Choose classics
When in doubt choose classics.
I think it’s safe to say that classic colors are always in style.
I wanted to keep things simple and black is my color of choice for this quick front door makeover.
Perfect Shade of Black
I honestly feel overwhelmed by the amount of color choices in the paint section at the hardware store.
I used Behr’s color of the year Cracked Pepper during my fireplace build and had some leftovers.
I think it goes well with the main color of my walls and would be a perfect shade of black for my front door.
Bold Accents for Big Impact
For years I was playing it safe in our home in terms of colors.
I painted the whole house the same purple-gray color, my kitchen is a mix of white and grey, and we had lots of white furniture and home decor.
Now I’m learning about color and how to use bold colors in my space.
I painted an accent wall in our master bedroom in the color Black Elegance by Behr and I love how it transformed our room.
That’s why I’m going for a bold yet classic front door!
How to paint a fiberglass door
Painting a door is rather simple and can be done in a matter of a few hours.
-
Prep your door
Start by cleaning your door to remove any dust and grime.
-
Fix imperfections
If you need to fill any holes, do that now using a wood putty. Especially if you’re replacing a door handle or hardware.
-
Sand
Give your door a light sand with 220 grit sandpaper. Don’t forget to remove sand dust afterward using a tack cloth.
-
Prime
Depending on the paint you use you might need to prime the door. I’d suggest using a good primer to ensure a good paint adhesion.
-
Paint
Using a paintbrush and a high-density foam roller paint your door. Make sure to brush and roll with the direction of the grain. You might need to do a few coats to get the desired color.
I did 2 coats on a door and trim around it, but I have to go back and do another coat to cover all the red I had on that door previously.
Admire your DIY door makeover
With any painting project patience is key. You just have to wait for each coat of paint to dry to get the best results.
Once it’s done step back and enjoy your brand new door!
I hope you enjoyed this front door transformation and are ready to tackle your next DIY project!
