Let’s chat about a recent project that transformed our mud room area in our garage – an IKEA shoe storage hack! We use the garage door entrance every day instead of the front door, so a proper shoe storage that is both beautiful and practical is a MUST!
This makeover took less than an hour and was so fun and easy to do! My 18 months old was there to help too and I managed to finish everything in one day. Let’s dive in!
Material List:
- IKEA shoe cabinet
- White and navy dots peel-and-stick wallpaper
- Scissors or utility knife
- Ruler
- Cleaning supplies
- Pencil
Step 1: Choose Your Canvas – IKEA Shoe Cabinet
I started with a basic IKEA shoe cabinet that I thrifted a couple of years ago on Facebook Marketplace. Practical, but boring, jut your standard IKEA dark chocolate cabinet.
Step 2: Pick the Perfect Wallpaper
I love to bring light into spaces, so white wallpaper with navy blue accents was a perfect match. You can find it at Lowes right here. They have lots of beautiful patterns to fit your style and color palette.
Step 3: Prep and Plan
First things first: I started by cleaning the cabinet doors to get rid of any dirt and grime and to ensure a smooth application.
Then I measured the doors and the wallpaper. I used both utility knife and scissor to make my cuts and they worked great.
Step 4: Apply the Wallpaper
Once the cabinet was clean and dry the fun part of transforming my boring IKEA cabinet began.
Working with peel and stick wallpaper is quite easy. You just need to peel the backing, align the wallpaper so it’s leveled and stick it onto the surface.
Even if you mess it up (I did a few times), you can peel it off and reposition it. Good thing that the doors were small and easy to work with.
You can use a credit card or just your hand to smooth out any air bubbles. Then you just repeat the process with remaining doors.
Step 5: Enjoy the Transformation
Step back and take it all in! I’m amazed how easy it was to transform this ordinary shoe cabinet into a funky piece!
